A University-Wide Resource
The Institute for Health Research and Policy fosters an environment in which University of Illinois at Chicago researchers in the social and health sciences flourish at all stages of their careers.
IHRP is the largest UIC entity devoted entirely to research. We are a campus leader in developing and applying new social science and population health methods and advancing the University’s research in the social and health sciences. We are committed to supporting researchers at all stages of their careers with outstanding administration, scientific expertise and mentoring.
History
The Institute for Health Research and Policy has been advancing the university’s research mission since 1997. Since then, hundreds of researchers — faculty from almost all the University’s Colleges — have carried out scientific studies with the Institute’s support.
The Institute was founded in 1997, designated by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees to advance multidisciplinary research throughout the University.
Research Supported at IHRP
IHRP is a research home that welcomes any UIC researcher whose work indirectly or directly impacts the overall health, well-being and quality of life for individuals, social groups and populations, especially those burdened by social inequity and premature death.
In particular, the Institute is designed to support researchers at all stages of their careers and is especially suited to administering large and complicated extramurally funded research. Learn more about the Institute's research interests.
Organizational Structure
The Institute is led by Robin J. Mermelstein, PhD, director, with associate directors David DuBois, PhD; Marian Fitzgibbon, PhD; and Rachel Gordon, PhD.
The Institute offers a hub of scientific and administrative professionals with extensive experience in supporting research excellence.
Extensive Experience in Grants Administration
The Institute has administered hundreds of studies and over $550 million of extramurally funded research, including projects supported by these governmental agencies and philanthropic foundations, as well as others:

The administrative team provides expert support for proposals, grants, subcontracts, and purchases as well as solutions for personnel management, data access and security, research communications, research methods, statistics, data management, and more.
