About

Dr. Michael L. Berbaum is the director and senior biostatistician of the Institute's Methodology Research Core. He also is an IHRP Fellow and collaborates as a co-investigator on various research projects at IHRP and elsewhere in UIC.

Throughout his career, Dr. Berbaum has provided statistical support to investigators in multidisciplinary health and community prevention studies as well as social sciences research.

Dr. Berbaum's research interests include applications of ordinal regression techniques to studies of diagnostic performance in radiology and studies of pain control. He also is interested in the resolution of statistical complications that arise from clustering, missing data, and sample selection in health studies.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Berbaum has taught advanced graduate-level courses at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences at the University of Michigan. Topics of those courses include experimental design, analysis of variance, and advanced categorical data analysis with a focus on models for longitudinal multi-strata and multi-level designs.

Prior to joining the UIC Institute for Health Research and Policy in 2000, he was a research social scientist at the Institute for Social Science Research at the University of Alabama.
